Obituary of Geraldine "Gerry" Tillman Simmons


Our beloved Geraldine "Gerry" Tillman Simmons quietly passed away Wednesday, July 26, 2017. 

Geraldine was born May 29, 1931 in Monroe, Georgia to the late Reverend Rufus J. and Bessie (Carter) Tillman, Sr. Geraldine attended and graduated from the Walton County Public School System. 

In January 1951, she was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Willie Andrew Simmons. To this union, two daughters were born. 

She joined Prospect AME Zion Church at an early age. After marrying, the couple moved to Cleveland, Ohio and joined Prince of Peace Baptist Church. She served on the Missionary Board. In July 1967, the family relocated to Lancaster, South Carolina and attended Cedar Creek AME Zion Church where Rev. Rufus J. Tillman, Sr. served as pastor until his illness. She later joined Mount Zion AME Zion Church in Lancaster, South Carolina. 

Geraldine worked several years for Springs Industries, Inc. before retiring. Geraldine had a deep commitment to serving the Lord whom she dearly loved. She constantly shared her testimony of faith with family members, friends and neighbors. She also had a great passion for planting flowers, all types of plants, shrubs and trees. Her yard reflected her passion over many years. She loved the outdoors. She would sit on her front porch for hours at a time enjoying the sunshine. She was indeed content and satisfied. 

Geraldine is survived by two daughters: Sandra (Lannie) Collins of Canton, Mississippi and Donna Jones of Charlotte, North Carolina; Four grandchildren: Annettra Simmons (deceased), Joseph Simmons, Jocelyn Jones and Jasmynn (Shannon) Jones Fields; Twelve great grandchildren and seven great, great grandchildren; Five sisters: Merrell Terrell of Monroe, Georgia, Arlonia Summerour of Chamblee, Georgia, Laura (Odell) Womack of Oakwood Village, Ohio, Emma (Alrick) Jones, Bessie Tillman and sister-in-law: Walter Lee Tillman of Lancaster, South Carolina; Two brothers: McKinley (Fannie) Tillman of Bogart, Georgia, and E. Dennis (Ruth) Tillman of Monroe, Georgia; An aunt: Susie Washington of Columbus, Ohio and an uncle: Joseph Tillman of Detroit, Michigan; Four sisters-in-law: Alice Morrow of Bethlehem, Georgia, Betty (Lucius) Skrine of Covington, Georgia, Estella (Johnny) Bell of Monroe, Georgia and Margie Wimberly of Macon, Georgia. Aunt "Gerry" enjoyed a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceding Geraldine in death were her sisters: Ethelene and husband, Glen Sims and Lucille and husband, Goodwin Smith; Brothers: Rufus and wife Josephine Tillman, Jr. and William Garland Tillman; Brother-in-law: David Terrell, Sr. and Raymond Carter, companion of Bessie Tillman.
