George Askew's Notes - 1/14/2017



  • 1860 US Federal Census for Slave Inhabitants in Henry County, Georgia (pg. 7, line 20) shows one slave matching the age of George.  His race is listed as Mulatto.  He is owned by Nancy Askew.
  • Georgia Property Tax Digests for 1865, 1869, 1870, 1871, and 1872 for various districts in Henry County, Georgia show George Askew listed as a “Freedmen” and working for W. Berry (possibly Harriett’s former owner).
  • A Georgia Property Tax Digest for Henry County, Georgia with an unknown date shows George Askew listed as a “Freedmen” and working for a Mr. Lewis.  The first name of the employer is either not documented or not legible.
  • 1880 US Federal Census for District 486 in Henry County, Georgia (pg. 21, lines 28-37), George (Mulatto) is 54 years old and working as a Farmer.  He is living with Harriett (Mulatto - age 45) and their children:  James, William, Frances, Helen, Emma, Sally, William, and Bud.  Why did they name two of their sons William?
  • 1900 US Federal Census for District for the Loves Precinct in White House, Henry County, Georgia documents George as a 74-year-old widower, living with his sister Ailsey Malsey (Mosely) and her family.
